Inter Miami and coach Javier Mascherano are weathering a rough patch in Major League Soccer, with mounting concerns over both form and leadership. The club has managed just one win in the last seven matches, conceding 23 goals in that stretch.
A pair of losses and a draw in the last three games has pushed the Herons into a slump – and this weekend’s clash against Eastern Conference leaders Philadelphia Union could prove decisive for the Argentine coach.
Inter Miami sits sixth in the Eastern Conference with 22 points, trailing Philadelphia by seven. A negative result at Subaru Park on Saturday could raise further questions.
And there's also the matter of Lionel Messi’s contract situation. The Argentine superstar's deal is set to expire at the end of the year, and the club has yet to secure an extension. Mascherano has emphasized communication within the squad – particularly with Messi.
“It’s not just Leo,” Mascherano said. “I speak with many players, and not only when things go badly. Coaching isn’t about being rigid with ideas – it’s about listening, adjusting, and making sure players feel comfortable on the field. They’re the ones executing the plan.”
Looking ahead to the upcoming showdown in Philadelphia, Mascherano stressed the importance of regaining defensive balance.
“We want to be protagonists, control the rhythm, and play higher up the pitch,” he said. “Every opponent requires a different tactical plan, but what we’ve lacked lately is defensive solidity – and we have to recover that quickly.”
On the issue of Messi’s future, Mascherano was clear about his limited role:
“That’s not for me to answer. Of course, I’d love for Leo to stay – it’s important for the fans, for the club, for all of us. But I’m not part of the negotiations. That’s the sporting director’s responsibility.”

Despite the turbulent form, Mascherano says he still enjoys the backing of ownership, including Jorge Mas and David Beckham, which he believes is key to staying focused.
“They’ve always supported me," he said, "and that gives me the calm to focus on football. Transfers and signings? That’s up to the front office.”

On June 14, Inter Miami kick off the FIFA Club World Cup, facing a challenging group that includes Al Ahly, Porto, and Palmeiras – a golden opportunity to showcase their growth on the global stage.
Later in the summer, the Leagues Cup returns, with Miami attempting to defend their title against Mexican clubs Atlas, Necaxa, and Pumas UNAM in the group phase. Mascherano views these tournaments as a proving ground – not just for the team, but for himself.
“Every coach goes through tough spells. What matters is how you respond," he said. "You need conviction in your methods, and you need leadership. Right now, we as coaches take full responsibility. The players must feel free to perform – without fear, without pressure.”
