da pinnacle: According to reports in The Sun, Chelsea defender Gary Cahill will look to quit the club during the January transfer window unless he gets more first-team minutes between now and then, and the Blues’ London rivals West Ham United must take full advantage.
What’s the word, then?
Well, The Sun report that the west London outfit’s captain is understandably unhappy having not played a single minute under new boss Maurizio Sarri so far this season, and he is ready to bring his six-year spell at Stamford Bridge to an end.
The Italian manager’s use of two centre-backs compared to the three that Antonio Conte preferred has only limited the 32-year-old’s game time even more, and while he is likely to get on the pitch in the Europa League and the Carabao Cup, that may not be enough.
The Sun adds that Cahill is hoping that he will be allowed to join a Premier League club in the New Year as a reward for his loyalty and commitment to the club.
Why should West Ham pounce?
Despite a big summer of spending, the east London outfit have made a dreadful start to the 2018/19 Premier League season after losing their opening four matches, and one of their biggest issues has been their defence.
While new boys Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena generally did pretty well in the 1-0 defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the London Stadium last time out, perhaps either would be better if they had a player with plenty of experience at this level alongside them – step forward, Cahill.

The 32-year-old is vastly experienced and has won Premier League titles, and there is no doubt that he could bring some quality and an organisational voice to a backline that has struggled for a long time now.
Given his age and the fact his contract runs out next summer, he should also be available for a cut-price fee.
