da bet vitoria: Mauricio Pochettino should look to his former side and target Alex McCarthy as Tottenham search for a new goalkeeper in the transfer market.
What’s the word?
Spurs are in need of a new stopper with 35-year-old Michel Vorm nearing the end of his contract in North London.
The former Swansea man has served as a worthwhile understudy to Hugo Lloris, but the Dutchman never presented a serious challenge to the captain’s starting role.
As a result, the French World Cup winner has not been pushed to a higher level in recent seasons and his form has dipped as a result.
Luring Southampton star McCarthy to the new Tottenham stadium come the New Year would be a more than worthwhile pursuit in order to correct Vorm’s shortcomings.
The 29-year-old has proven himself to be a high-quality goalkeeper on the south coast, catching the attention of Gareth Southgate who handed the Guildford-born ace his England debut.
Southampton are also expecting interest in their number one, and believe a number of Premier League clubs are monitoring his situation.
CheekySport’s Joel claims Spurs badly need to invest in January after not having “the balls” to beat Arsenal. Check out his uncensored opinion in the video below…
Gazzaniga is not the long-term number one
If Pochettino opts against signing a proven Premier League goalkeeper in January, or next summer, he would be leaving Tottenham vulnerable should Lloris pick up an injury or suspension.
You would imagine this season will be Vorm’s last at the club, given his age and contract, which would see Paulo Gazzaniga promoted to second choice.
The 26-year-old has occasionally shown in his rare outings that he has the potential to fulfil the back-up slot, but he has not been convincing enough in those to warrant taking over from Lloris in the long-term.
His shortfalls are the same as those that prevented Vorm from ever challenging for the number one jersey and would keep Lloris playing at his current level, as he has no pressure from within the club for his spot in the side.
McCarthy’s arrival would be a jolt to the system for the 31-year-old, leading to more wonder saves like those that kept West Ham from scoring in the London Derby.
