da roleta: Newcastle have completed their first signing of the January transfer window in Nabil Bentaleb but the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards suggests there could be more business to be conducted.
What’s the word?
The Magpies brought in Jetro Willems on loan last summer and he has since impressed fans with his performances, leading to calls for him to be signed on a permanent basis.
Such a clause is part of the deal and it will cost the north-east outfit £10m to keep him at St. James’ Park, but an injury picked up against Chelsea which rules him out for the rest of the season has put some doubt over that.
However, Edwards claims that the club is still interested in conducting a permanent deal for the Netherlands international, and it is possible they could use the remaining days in the transfer window to do so.
Positive step
The long-term injury to Willems indicates that the club was perhaps correct to bide their time and assess the player over the course of the season, as he could have very easily dropped off in his performance levels.
Willems has had some very good moments in a black and white shirt with goals against Liverpool and Man City, as well as two assists in total, all from left wing-back.
From a defensive perspective, he has also impressed with 1.9 tackles and 0.9 interceptions per game, and that led Bruce to start him in 18 Premier League matches out of 21.

Such a return is perhaps why the club is keen on making him a permanent Newcastle player, despite the injury, though they should perhaps wait for a period in order to determine the full extent of the problem.
Nevertheless, £10m represents a very reasonable outlay for an accomplished Premier League player in today’s market and given he has bedded in so well on and off the pitch,Âit would be a shame to see him leave Tyneside.
Meanwhile, a potential Newcastle signing could have an intriguing effect on the squad if he is brought in.
